Britain's Laura Robson lost in straight sets to world number 106 Greta Arn in the first round of the Pan Pacific Open after coming through qualifying. The 16-year-old Londoner, ranked 227th, went down 6-4 6-3 to the Hungarian to end her campaign in Tokyo. Victory would have seen Robson go through to play world number two Caroline Wozniacki in round two. The teenager had beaten world number 57 Anastasija Sevastova and number 100 Simona Halep in qualifying. Arn beat British number one Elena Baltacha in the final round of qualifying.

Russia's Maria Kirilenko secured a place in round two with a 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 victory over Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who was beaten in qualifying but survived after Li Na of China withdrew at the last minute due to stomach pains. Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova comfortably saw off Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3 6-3, and 16th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia beat Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 7-5. Wozniacki is the top seed in Tokyo following the withdrawal of world number one Serena Williams because of a foot injury, with US Open runner-up Vera Zvonareva, world number six Jelena Jankovic, French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and defending champion Maria Sharapova also in the field. In Seoul, Russia's Alisa Kleybanova won only her second WTA title on Sunday when she thumped Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-1 6-3 in the Korea Open final.
