Murray lost 6-3 0-6 6-4 to Gasquet in the quarter-finals in Paris

The British number one went down to Richard Gasquet in a late bid for the final spot in the Shanghai field.

But he admitted: "The highest I can be in China is the second alternate.

"I'd rather not go all the way over to Shanghai and end up not playing a match. Two guys need to pull out and I'm not expecting that to happen."

Murray admitted he was frustrated to lose to Gasquet in Paris.

But he insisted he was proud of his run-in to the season after recovering from the wrist injury that has hampered him during the campaign.

The 20-year-old, who achieved a career-first top 10 ranking of eighth in the spring before his injury, retained his title in San Jose and before winning another in St Petersburg last week.

"I think it's been a really positive year and hopefully I can continue that into next season," he said.

And the Scot saluted his coach Brad Gilbert for helping him to revive his game.

"Under him I've had a great year and I plan to start training really hard the week right after Shanghai and then see what happens in the Australian Open," he said.
