"The closest we've ever come before is a draw so we're obviously pleased to get the result," said Young after the 13-5 win over Bourgoin.

"We were outstanding in defence, but were a bit messy in attack at times.

"There is a lot to improve on, but let's just enjoy this win because it hasn't happened in the last 11 years."

The victory set another record as it ensured a 100% winning start for the Welsh regions for the first time in the competition's 11-year history.

The Blues led from start to finish at Stade Pierre Rajon, and never looked in danger until Bourgoin launched a desperate final siege which saw flanker Brice Monzeglio score a try two minutes from time.

Martyn Williams scored the Blues' only try in the second half after full-back Ben Blair had landed two penalties before the interval.

Flanker Williams had an outstanding game in defence as he constantly disrupted any flow in Bourgoin's attacks.

He said: "This win is big for us. We're building slowly and maturing as a side.

"We're not the finished article yet, we know that but we're going in the right direction and it's great for some of the younger boys to sample a win in France."

English giants Leicester Tigers, who lost 19-21 at home to Munster, are next up for Young's side.

The Blues have switched the match from their Arms Park ground to the adjacent Millennium Stadium to ensure a bigger pay-day from the expected bumper crowd.
