Lawrence Dallaglio insists he is happy with his role as an impact substitute for England - for the time being.
The former England captain replaced flanker Joe Worsley after 65 minutes against Italy, but said he was content with 15 minutes of action.
"I wasn't expecting to get on earlier - I just do as I'm told," said Dallaglio.
"I'm part of the squad and that's my role at the moment. The coaches will use the bench as they feel appropriate and you have to respect that."
The 33-year-old returned to the England fold for the first Six Nations game against Wales after 18 months of international retirement.
"Everyone who is on the bench wants to be in the team," said Dallaglio, who flew back to play in Wasps' 19-19 draw with Northampton on Sunday.
"But we have got to accept that the guys who are in the team are playing very well at the moment.
"You have just got to be ready when you get your chance."
Worsley admitted it was "annoying" to be substituted towards the end of the match, but said he was happy with England coach Andy Robinson's decision.
"I wasn't reluctant to go off," said Worsley.
"I was really enjoying the game and that's why it was annoying to come off with 15 minutes to go because it was opening up a bit."
Dallaglio came off the bench to replace captain Martin Corry in the game against Wales, a substitution that was fiercely criticised by former England prop Graham Rowntree.
Rowntree, a Leicester team-mate of Corry's, also said Dallaglio had talked himself back into the international set-up.
"Graham is entitled to his opinion," said Dallaglio.
"You wouldn't expect him to say anything else about one of his team-mates, would you?"
