Super League

Wakefield fought back from 20 points down to record a shock 28-24 win over Castleford and lift themselves off the foot of the Super League table.

Richie Mathers put Tigers ahead before Martin Aspinall added a second and Chris Dean struck back for Wakefield.

Jordan Thompson and Danny Orr went over either side of half time for Cas.

But tries by Kieran Hyde, Josh Griffin, Paul Johnson and Frankie Mariano in a devastating 16-minute spell ensured the Wildcats took a famous victory.

The hosts made a great start as they recorded two converted tries inside the opening 10 minutes.

Richard Owen combined well with Mathers for the first on the left and Dixon added the first of four conversions.

Aspinwall was then judged to have grounded the ball for the second - even though it appeared he had been held up by several Wakefield players.

The visitors got off the mark when Dean rose to gather Tommy Lee's high kick and ground the ball with ease.

The try went unconverted but the Wildcats thought they had another when ex-Cas prop Liam Higgins went in but his effort was ruled out for obstruction.

Rangi Chase and Orr worked well together to put Joe Arundel into space and his quick hands allowed Thompson to dive in right at the stroke of half time.

When Orr scored shortly after the break to make it 24-4 Cas had one hand on the Adam Watene Trophy, but few could have predicted what unfolded in the next 40 minutes.

First, stand-off Hyde exploited a hole in the Cas line and Griffin added the first of his four conversions.

The high kick was deployed again and it paid dividends for a second time when Griffin latched on to Hyde's punt to touch down.

Johnson gave Wakefield hope after he went under the posts and when Mariano crossed after collecting Lee's ball over the top both sets of supporters were stunned.

Castleford tried everything to fashion more points of their own as the clock ran down but the visitors clung to their lead.

Castleford coach Terry Matterson:
"I think we just clocked off. We thought the game was won and were looking to Monday [against Leeds] but we were making stupid mistakes - it reeks of complacency.

"We were certainly ready to play at the start of the game - something's happened, the other team got through and we kept making mistakes.

"We've got to continue to work hard and it's a real reality check."

Wakefield coach John Kear:
"They've got what they deserved tonight and I'm really proud of them.

"At half-time, we felt we were really in the game and it was a little lopsided at 18-4 because Cas scored at the death of the half and then obviously when they came out and scored straight away afterwards, it made it doubly tough.

"But the resolve, the character, the determination, call it what you want of this group, it's very special and you've got to applaud them."
