Jersey netballers out of league

Netball

Jersey's netball team has been forced to pull out of the South West netball league because of the cost of travelling to away games.

Jersey's senior and under-16 teams had taken part in the league for the past few seasons.

"It was far too expensive and there were a lot of issues with the travel arrangements," said Jersey Netball Association president Jackie Nelson.

She says they will now concentrate on organising weekend events in Jersey.

Nelson hopes to set up at least two weekend-long events over the coming season with clubs from the UK invited to play.

"We decided that the best approach would be to invite top-class club teams over for a weekend, bringing their senior teams and under 16s, and have tournaments running over the weekend," she told BBC Radio Jersey.

She is also hoping to be able to send the island sides to a tournament in the UK.

"Yes, it is a disappointment," she conceded. "But I think most sports know that one of the huge obstacles of playing sport in Jersey is that huge stretch of water between our island and the mainland."
