McCoy's life off the racetrack has changed over the past number of years with his marriage to Chanelle and the arrival of baby Eve, who is now 15 months old.
He has always maintained that he would never become a trainer after his racing career ends but with his 35th birthday approaching in May he knows that he will find it difficult when he eventually has to call it a day.
"I've always been aware of the fact that I don't want to be a sports person who has possibly gone on longer than they should have done. I don't think about when I shouldn't be riding.
"A lot of people have asked me recently about how long I will go for. I hope I will know when the time is right and I can get out for the right reasons. It's not something that can be planned or taken for granted."
Chanelle told the Racing Post: "I've never asked him what he plans to do next, but it's sure to be mentally stimulating.
"It would be impossible to be as successful as he has been twice in a lifetime and I would hate him to believe he had to be the very best in whatever profession he turns to."
