Whitehead's gold was the highlight for Team GB in Hamburg

Great Britain's taekwondo team have followed up their eight-medal haul at the Dutch Open with three podium places at the German Open in Hamburg.

Stella Whitehead won -63kg gold, while Romaine Bailey (-54kg) and Jordan Gayle (-59kg junior) and both won silver.

GB performance director Gary Hall said: "I thought the team performed well under some challenging circumstances.

"Praise must go to Stella, who bounced back superbly after the disappointment of not medalling at the Dutch Open."

Doncaster's Whitehead, who just missed out in Eindhoven, beat Sirmagul Cukurlu of Germany 4-2 in a fiercely-contested final.

Gayle, from Manchester, only just lost out on gold after being defeated by another German, Tahir Gulec, in the final.

Having won gold in the Netherlands, he looks to be in good form as he gears up for the World Junior Championships, which take place in Turkey in May.

The German Open gave Team GB their first experience of new electronic body protectors introduced by World Taekwondo Federation.

Hall was critical of the German national governing body's timing, saying: "I find it amazing that these are introduced just five months before an Olympics where we know they will not feature.

"For the sake of five months I would have expected the host national federations to wait to avoid unsettling preparations in the build up to Beijing.

Hall added: "We all recognise that electronic body protectors are going to be introduced at some stage, but it's important that their introduction doesn't remove the essence of the sport.

"Based on this weekends action the manufacturers still haven't got it right and because of this we will review whether we are going to send a substantial team to the European Championships ahead of the Beijing Games or not."
