Birmingham's difficult season ended with a 47-43 home defeat against King's Lynn in the Premier Trophy.
The Brummies have been the victims of an awful run of injuries all year, which has left boss Graham Drury keen to look ahead to 2009.
"I will leave no stone unturned in my efforts to help us back to the top next year," said Drury.
A 15-point maximum from Jason Lyons could not prevent a losing end to the campaign, Craig Watson adding 12.
The meeting started going King's Lynn's way when Birmingham's Polish rider Tomasz Piszcz was controversially excluded in heat eight after a coming together with Kozza Smith.
Smith tipped the balance with 11 points on the night, backing up Tomas Topinka (14) and Kevin Doolan (12).
