Isle of Man rider Sean Murphy claimed victory in Newcomers Race A as racing at the 2009 Manx Grand Prix finally got underway on Tuesday.

Despite the conditions Murphy finished two minutes two seconds ahead of Derek Shields, with David Mulligan third.

Murphy said: "I was just happy to get home. The conditions were terrifying, especially at Ginger Hall and Ramsey."

The shortened race was one of four run simultaneously to get the programme back on track.

Meanwhile, Adrian Kershaw won Newcomers Race B on his 400cc Kawasaki, with Andy Lawson second and Andrew Farrell completing the podium.

Elsewhere, the new Post Classic 4-stroke event was won by Ryan Farquar.

Farquar's fantastic season continued when he took the chequered flag on his 1000cc Suzuki, three minutes 29 seconds ahead of Guy Martin, with Dave Madsen-Mygdal third.

Brian Mateer won the Post Classic 2-stroke race, some four minutes ahead of Ewan Hamilton, with Paul Coward third.
