Defeat 'hard to take' for Barham

Benn Barham
Barham has never won on the European tour

Ashford's Benn Barham has revealed his disappointment at being denied his maiden European Tour victory at the Austrian Open.

The 33-year-old led for three and a half days but was pipped by Spain's Rafael Cabrera Bello who shot a tour record equalling final round of 60.

Barham had a chance to force a play-off but missed an 18 foot putt on the final hole to finish second.

He said: "To be beaten by one by someone shooting a 60 is hard to take."

"I'm very happy with the way I have played but disappointed to finish second."

Barham led by three shots from Soren Hansen going into the final day, and saw Hansen as his main rival for the title. But being beaten by Cabrera Bello is not an eventuality he had considered.

"I thought if I stayed ahead of him [Hansen] I would be fine, but you can never underestimate anybody," he said.

A win would have guaranteed Barham a place on the 2010 tour, but as things stand he still has to have a good end of the season to retain his playing rights.

I was at a stage where I don't know where my next decent result is coming from, I was stuck in a rut, but to produce a result like this really gives me confidence

"I've got lots to be proud of. I've worked hard for the last couple of weeks and I have seen an improvement.

"I was at a stage where I don't know where my next decent result is coming from, I was stuck in a rut, but to produce a result like this really gives me confidence."
