Tranmere Rovers have set up their first signing of the summer by agreeing to bring in midfielder Mark Allott from Oldham Athletic on a two-year contract.

Allott, 31, will officially sign when the transfer window re-opens on 1 July.

Rovers boss Ronnie Moore said: "I'm delighted to have signed Mark. This is just the first signing of the summer.

"Mark's a quality midfielder who has captained both Chesterfield and Oldham. He's a hard worker who will be a good influence on our younger players."

Allott began his career at Oldham, progressing through their youth system. And, following his move to Chesterfield in 2002, he became the club's Player of the Season in 2005/06.

I can play the holding role in midfield or get forward, and I'll always give 100% for the club.

After rejoining Oldham, he was the Latics' Player of the Season for 2007/08. But he turned down the offer of a new contract at Boundary Park.

And he will instead help to start a rebuilding process at Prenton Park as Rovers, who missed out on the League One play-offs thanks to Scunthorpe's late goal on the final day of the season, prepare for another assault on promotion to the Championship.

"I'm pleased to be joining Tranmere and looking forward to getting started in pre-season," said Allott. "I'm raring to go already.

"I can play the holding role in midfield or get forward, and I'll always give 100% for the club."

Rovers released four players at the end of last season, midfielders Edrissa Sonko and Adnan Ahmed and defenders Luke Waterfall and Danny Holmes. And captain Anthony Kay left the club for Huddersfield Town last week.
