Jones' miss came just three minutes into Tuesday's 2-0 defeat by Liverpool
Sunderland boss Ricky Sbragia admitted striker Kenwyne Jones was affected after he missed a key chance in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat by Liverpool.
Jones, 24, squandered a one-on-one with Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina after three minutes which could have changed the course of the game.
Sbragia told BBC Radio Newcastle: "He knows he should have scored it, and if he had it could have been different.
"He'll be disappointed but I don't need to tell him that."
Meanwhile, Sbragia admitted he needed to consider his players fitness ahead of a tough run-in for the Wearsiders.
Fringe players such as striker Daryl Murphy and winger Carlos Edwards were given a run-out against Liverpool, as the coaching team looked ahead to Saturday's home visit of Tottenham at the weekend.
"We took a couple of players off, Kenwyne Jones and Steed Malbranque, thinking ahead of the Tottenham game," added Sbragia.
"Looking at it, if I keep them on they're using energy they don't need to use."
Sunderland are 12th in the Premier League after 27 games and are five points off the relegation zone.
