Howe urged to follow Lewis lead

Morecambe's new loan striker Rene Howe
Howe hit nine goals in 19 league starts for Rochdale last season

Striker Rene Howe has been challenged to follow in the footsteps of Peterborough team-mate Joe Lewis after joining Morecambe on loan.

Lewis joined Posh for £400,000 last season following a loan spell at the Shrimps and earned an England call-up.

Shrimps assistant Mark Lillis told BBC Radio Lancashire: "Joe Lewis comes along and ends up in the England squad, so Rene has to use this as development.

"Manchester United do it all the time with their youngsters."

Howe hit nine goals on loan at League Two rivals Rochdale last season to help them reach the play-offs.

I'm thinking if I can play in every game, my target is 15 goals or more

Lillis said: "I'm looking forward to working with him - he'll be the quickest outlet of all our strikers - he knows the division and got close to winning promotion."

Speaking after his first day's training at Morecambe, Howe said: "I know I've still got two more years at Peterborough when I go back and only a year here and I want to settle down.

"But sometimes things happen for a reason and maybe this is a good opportunity for me to take and prove I can do the business.

"If you're playing and you're doing well it can do things for you whether you're on loan or not - if people want you they want you."

Howe also revealed his personal target for the new campaign: "At the start of any season if you're an honest striker you say I'd like 10 goals, but I'm thinking if I can play in every game, I'm thinking 15 goals or more."
