Gills suffer double injury blow

Gillingham's latest 3-1 pre-season victory at Bishops Stortford was marred by injuries to two key midfielders.

Stuart Lewis's game was ended by a tough tackle from Stortford's Ola Okinawwo, and his replacement Adam Miller also picked up a knock.

"They're not in a good way. They're both very swollen. Stuart has done his ankle and Adam Miller the top of his foot," Stimson told BBC Radio Kent.

"It's a nightmare because we don't want that at this stage of the season."

Stimson admitted the injuries had put pre-season results into perspective.

"I went home on Saturday not too happy because of the result, and when we got home I realised that results don't mean anything," he said.

"The massive plus on Saturday was that we didn't get any injuries, where as here we've won the game but have picked up two injuries.

"But we'll have to deal with it, the boys will get the treatment they need and Stuart, probably more so than Adam, has got youth on his side.

"We'll probably have to wait a week before we can identify how long they're going to be out."

Stimson dismissed any thought that the challenge on Lewis was malicious.

"I don't think it was a nasty tackle," he said.

"I don't think the game was played in that spirit, I'd certainly come back for another pre-season game here. It hasn't put me off in that way.

"It's lucky we've got 12 midfielders, isn't it? People keep saying 'Why have you got so many midfielders?' This is why.

"Mark Bentley will play for us tomorrow night at Aveley so that's another midfield player coming back, and we're going to put a deal on the table for the young boy Toks (Rashid Yussuff).

"They'll be missed because they're good players but hopefully not for too long."

Gillingham's goal scorers on Tuesday night were Dennis Oli, Adam Miller and Luke Rooney.
