Carlisle boss slams media leaks

Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott has hit out at people who have leaked details of the club's transfer targets.

He revealed Joe Anyinsah's move last week nearly fell through after rumours of their interest were made public.

"A club tried to hijack the deal because they found out that we were going to sign him," Abbott told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"It's upsetting and it's not right. If these people want to take me on then they will find me difficult as well."

He added: "The people that put the rumours out may get the message."

Abbott had previously expressed his frustration at speculation over his possible transfer targets this month.

The Carlisle boss, who has completed permanent deals for both Anyinsah and Graham Kavangh this month, is refusing to reveal the identity of his targets as he seeks to further strengthen his squad.

The lack of respect that people show to my club and my players really upsets me

"People don't understand. We nearly lost (Joe) to another club at the latest hour when we were 99% of our way through negotiations.

"That must be an indicator to people why we keep our work as quiet and as low-key as possible."

News of Graham Kavanagh's appointment as player-coach was revealed in the media on Friday, prior to Abbott being able to inform his players and staff.

"The lack of respect that people show to my club and my players really upsets me," Abbott said.

"We didn't know that we could sign Kav until around six o'clock on Thursday night so we had no time at all to let the players know," Abbott said.

"That's why we didn't talk to anybody. I hadn't made an announcement and I wondered how people could know about it before the players knew about it?"

Abbott said his players had a right to know first what was going on at their club.

"We want unity at this club and we want everyone together. We've a lot of respect for the players and we want them to know exactly what's going on before it gets out in the wide open world.

The Cumbrians' boss also said the club's supporters had a right to know what was happening - but only when news was ready to be made public.

"I'd like to think I'm very open and honest and our supporters have a right to know what's going on," Abbott said.

"They're the most important people alongside the players. Not the television and the papers and the radio and everybody else.

"That's why we deal with everybody honestly and at the right times and that's why it was upsetting that the players were the last to know. That's not right."
