Abbott is in his second spell of caretaker charge at Brunton Park
Carlisle United caretaker boss Greg Abbott is set to find out whether he has the job on a full-time basis before the January transfer window.
Early indications had suggested that Abbott would be given until the end of January to earn the job permanently.
"Greg has told me that the end of January is too long," Carlisle chief executive David Allen told BBC Radio Cumbria.
"Greg's chomping at the bit. We need to give him a fair crack at it."
Abbott, 44, is in his second spell in caretaker charge following the departure of John Ward this week on the back of 10 defeats in 11 games.
He previously took charge of the team for 10 games last season following the dismissal of Neil McDonald just one game into the new campaign - prior to Ward's appointment last October.
And the Cumbrians chief executive is confident the club could make a clean start in the coming weeks, despite concerns from some supporters over Abbott's involvement in Ward's coaching staff.
"Nobody can put their finger on why it didn't happen but we're hoping the change will work," Allen told BBC Radio Cumbria on Tuesday evening.
"I think the majority of fans will see John Ward and Greg Abbott as two totally different people.
"I think we will definitely see a very different playing style under Greg,
"He did a very good job when he was caretaker and I think we would be heavily criticised if we didn't give him the opportunity."
