Bristol City manager Gary Johnson says Richard Keogh is likely to have played his last game for the club, after the 21-year-old failed to sign a new deal.
The young defender is out of contract at Ashton Gate but City are entitled to compensation as he is under 24.
"I presume he's getting advice and we're waiting to see where he pops up," Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol. "Then they have to do a deal with us."
"It looks like the player has made his mind up his future is not here."
Keogh was City's young player of the year in 2006/07, but his career at Ashton Gate faltered when he refused to sign a contract extension.
He spent most of last season on loan, spending two months at Huddersfield Town, then a month at Carlisle United and finally two months with Cheltenham Town.
"He's probably missed out on a couple of very good seasons, and missed out financially," added Johnson. "I think it was a silly decision on his part."
