Leyton Orient progressed to the second round of the Carling Cup with a victory at fellow League one side Colchester.
The visitors led within two minutes when Romanian striker Adrian Patulea headed home JJ Melligan's cross.
Melligan made it 2-0 when he fired home a low cross-shot after Jason Demetriou had picked him out.
Colchester's Clive Platt was sent off for violent conduct before Simon Hackney fired in a late free-kick for the U's, but it was only a consolation.
Colchester United boss Paul Lambert told BBC Essex:
"We were poor and didn't deserve to go through. We never got going, lost a bad goal at the beginning, that sets the tone but you have 89 minutes to put it right again.
"We just never got going tonight.
"It's not like him [Platt], he's normally a placid lad, he's better than that - if he has done something."
