Sales made his first-class debut for Northants in 1996

Northants batsman David Sales has revealed the thinking behind his decision to miss the whole season and undergo further knee surgery. The 31-year-old former county skipper was also ruled out for the whole of 2001 after injuring himself on an England A tour in West Indies. "It's been a frustrating time," Sales told BBC Radio Northampton. "We discussed it and thought it would be best to get it sorted now and prepare for next season." "My knee's pretty weak and that weakness has caused other injury problems. "So I'll have the [reconstructive] surgery and hopefully be fully fit by February or March next year, ready for pre-season," he added. After a similar operation eight years ago, Sales did not miss a single County Championship match for Northants between 2002 and the end of last summer. Following interest from other clubs, he signed a new four-year deal to keep him at Wantage Road until at last 2012.
