Ireland players in cash protest

Ireland's players refused to do media interviews after their win over the Netherlands in Belfast on Wednesday because of a protest over payments.

The players say that they have not received any proceeds from Ireland's surprise World Cup exploits.

Ireland team manager Roy Torrens said the issue was a "misunderstanding" and that the Irish Cricket Union's cheques to the players "are in the post".

"I think you will find it will all be resolved fine," Torrens told BBC Sport.

"The boys throught this would be appropriate action to take today because of the non-payment."

Ireland are in action in their second match in the Quadrangular Series against the West Indies in Dublin on Saturday and Torrens added that he was confident that the financial row would be resolved ahead of that game.

Torrens insisted that the Irish Cricket Union and the organisation's chief executive Warren Deutrom "are working extremely hard to bring new sponsors into the game".

In an ideal world, we'd love to have the boys on central contracts

Ireland team manager Roy Torrens

"After the euphoria of the World Cup, people were saying it was going to be easy to get sponsorship but the reality of the situation is that they are still as difficult to get.

"Everybody intended to jump on the bandwagon for the two months while we were in the World Cup but now we are facing reality again.

"In an ideal world, we'd love to have the boys on central contracts so we don't lose the Ed Joyces, the Eoin Morgans and the Boyd Rankins."

Last month, opening batsman Jeremy Bray refused to make himself available for the one-day internationals against India and South African because he said that representing Ireland was leaving him out of pocket.

Eoin Morgan has also been critical of match fees that players receive for Ireland duty.

Ireland coach Phil Simmons steered clear of Wednesday's controversy, preferring to take the postives from his team's dramatic one-run win over the Dutch.

The Irish seemed dead and buried at Stormont as a career-best 71 from Mudassar Bukhari meant the Dutch needed just 25 runs from the remaining seven overs with seven wickets in hand.

I have to praise the bowling of Kevin O'Brien and Andre Botha who were very hard to get away

But the tight bowling of Kevin O'Brien (1-19) and Andre Botha (1-21) rescued Ireland from the brink and gave Simmons his first victory as coach on Irish soil.

"It's a step forward. In the past when we were in this sort of situation we would have lost," said Simmons.

"I have to praise the bowling of Kevin O'Brien and Andre Botha who were very hard to get away.

"It was top-class bowling and that added to a little bit of luck saw us through.

"The Dutch really were coasting and have only themselves to blame and I think they panicked a bit towards the end which definitely played into our hands.

Dutch all-rounder Peter Borren agreed that his side had shot themselves in the foot after throwing away a seemingly unassailable position.

"With 20 runs to get and plenty of overs to get them it was obviously our game for the taking and it was more that we lost it rather than they won it," said Borren.
