COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Surrey 380, Glamorgan 72-2 Surrey 4pts, Glamorgan 3pts
Match scorecard
Chris Schofield faced 132 balls for his 63, hitting eight fours

Surrey took control on a rain-shortened second day at The Oval to dent Glamorgan's hopes of winning promotion from Division Two. After resuming on 324-6, Surrey were bowled out for 380, former England leg spinner Chris Schofield making 63. Glamorgan then lost Gareth Rees and Mark Cosgrove in reaching 72-2 before the weather forced an early close. The Welsh county need a total 25 points from their final two fixtures to be promoted to Division One. In the nine overs of play that were possible before lunch, Surrey added 19 runs but lost Gareth Batty (34), bowled playing across the line to Jim Allenby (2-70). Schofield moved to his first Championship half-century of the season after the interval and, in an eighth-wicket stand of 29 with Chris Tremlett, looked to have Surrey on course for maximum batting points.

606: DEBATE
|
But as the clouds gathered, Allenby and James Harris polished off the last three Surrey wickets in the space of 32 deliveries with the second new ball. Glamorgan, facing a follow-on target of 231, lost Rees in the fourth over of their reply when he was trapped on the crease by Tremlett. Cosgrove, who had been strong through the off side, had his stumps disturbed by Stuart Meaker to leave Jamie Dalrymple and Ben Wright to see the visitors to tea. Only 19 more balls were possible in the evening session before the heavens opened, cutting the time available for Glamorgan to pull off a comeback victory.
