Herschelle Gibbs hit a half century on his County Championship debut
Herschelle Gibbs hit a half century as Glamorgan eventually beat the weather to make 155-3 on a rain-hit first day against Essex at Chelmsford.
Just over half the scheduled overs were lost in a day interrupted by four separate rain breaks.
But Gibbs hit 53, backed by 59 from fellow opener Gareth Rees in an opening partnership worth 115.
The Essex seamers hit back late on to take three wickets, claiming the scalps of Gibbs, Rees and Ben Wright.
Gibbs is in his second spell at Sophia Gardens, having hit 281 runs in eight games in last season's Twenty20 Cup. But, at the age of 35, this is his first appearance in English County Championship cricket.
After Glamorgan skipper Jamie Dalymple had chosen to bat, Gibbs announced his return with a classy performance illustrated by a number of textbook cover drives.
But no sooner than he had raised his bat than he played around a delivery from Ryan ten Doeschate that knocked out the off stump.
Just nine balls later, Graham Napier pinned Wright in his crease as he shuffled across in front of his stumps.
And, although Rees continued to play effectively with a restrained and responsible approach, the return of David Masters proved his undoing.
Playing forward to the fifth ball of Masters' new spell, he was caught behind thanks to a brilliant catch from James Foster diving low to his right.
