Brutal White puts Glos to sword
County Championship D2, Taunton: Somerset 412-6 v Glos (day one, stumps)

A brutal double century from Australian Cameron White led the way for Somerset as they stormed to a dominant 412-6 against Gloucestershire on day one.

Marcus Trescothick (17) and Justin Langer (18) endured rare failures as the home side were reduced to 65-3.

But White took up the baton and ended the day 201 not out off 282 balls.

He shared in stands of 123 and 157 with James Hildreth (60) and Peter Trego (48), the second of which was ended by Carl Greenidge, who claimed 3-103.

It was the second double century of White's career and the 23-year-old batted with great maturity, hitting a six and 28 fours after visiting captain Alex Gidman bravely decided to put Somerset in.

However, when Anthony Ireland, Mark Hardinges and Greenidge took a wicket each to remove the top three, the decision did not look too bad.

And Langer later apologised to both officials and the Gloucestershire team after greeting his dismissal, given out caught, with a shake of the head and a momentary refusal to leave the pitch.

White dominated the Gloucestershire attack after lunch, reaching his century off 146 balls, and he did not give a chance until reaching 149, when Hamish Marshall spilled a sharp catch in the gully off Greenidge.
