Jesse Ryder tossed away the chance of a maiden Test century

West Indies put in a decent day's work on the third day of the first Test in Dunedin, limiting New Zealand to 365 and then replying with 39-0.

After day two had been washed out, the Black Caps resumed on 226-4 with Jesse Ryder on 54 and Brendon McCullum four.

Ryder went on to hit 89 while Windies pacemen Daren Powell and Fidel Edwards each picked up three wickets.

The day finished at 8pm local time in exceptionally cold, gloomy conditions with captain Chris Gayle on 39.

Ryder came within two runs of his highest Test score, but was denied a maiden Test century, falling to Powell after one of the ill-judged shots which has marred his short Test career.

He mis-hit a pull, giving square-leg a catch after hitting 12 fours, including several sweetly timed cover drives.

Powell claimed New Zealand's first wicket on the opening day and returned in damaging spells Saturday to dismiss Ryder and Daniel Vettori (30), New Zealand's last specialist batsman.

Edwards (3-91) captured the wickets of James Franklin (7), Kyle Mills (12) and Iain O'Brien (4) to wrap up the New Zealand tail.

Damp ground conditions prevented any play in the morning session Saturday, compounding problems caused on the first two days by rain and bad light.

All-rounder James Franklin (7), returning to New Zealand's team after an 18-month absence through injury, was partially a victim of the conditions when he slipped and trod on his own stumps, falling hit wicket to Edwards.

Four decisions - three by the West Indies and one by New Zealand - were referred to television umpire Rudi Koertzen during the day under the referral system being trialled in this series.

Koertzen found cause to reverse only one decision, giving out Kyle Mills lbw for 12 after he had previously been ruled not out by Indian umpire Amiesh Saheba.
