Sharapova has been practising in Warsaw despite the poor weather

Russia's Maria Sharapova will return to singles action for the first time in 10 months against Italian Tathiana Garbin at this week's Warsaw Open. The former world number one and three-time Grand Slam champion has not played a singles match since injuring her shoulder in Montreal last August. Sharapova, 22, played at Indian Wells in the doubles in March but then pulled out of Miami and the Madrid Open. After missing so much tennis, she has slipped to 65th in the world rankings. Should she beat Garbin, ranked 71st, Sharapova will face either top seed Caroline Wozniacki or a qualifier. British number one Anne Keothavong is also in action in Warsaw and takes on American seventh seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands in round one.

Sharapova told her website: "I am very happy to report I will make my singles return to the tour in Warsaw. "Although it has not been an easy process these past few months I really believe it's made me such a stronger person. "I know it is going to take me a while to get back into the groove of playing tournaments and matches, but I am so excited to be competing again."
