Kosgei's time of 59 minutes and 58 seconds - a new course record - was the first sub-hour half-marathon seen in Britain.

O'Sullivan was up against a strong field in the women's event, but she triumphed in a time of one hour, seven minutes and 19 seconds - a personal best and Irish record.

But the real character of the race came from the 47,000 runners, young and old, who are expected to raise thousand of pounds for charity by running the 13-mile course.

Well done to my brother-in-law Goody, who ran on behalf of the CF Trust. His time was 1hr 41mins, which put me to shame watching the event on TV from the comfort of the settee.

Well done John Motson for competing, and to Brendan Foster, who at last has taken up the challenge and will be an example to all. His present size made me look at myself and do some radical weight and fitness training starting last May. I've now entered, and at 55 I am looking forward to power-walking the Dublin Marathon at the end of this month.
