Dafydd James and Casey Laulala joined the Blues after Evans

New Blues centre Gavin Evans says the intense rivalry for a midfield spot at the Cardiff region will be positive. The one-cap Wales three-quarter, 25, joined from the Scarlets in the summer to compete with Jamie Roberts, Gareth Thomas, Tom Shanklin and Dafydd Hewitt. Since then the Blues have also signed Dafydd James and Kiwi Casey Laulala. "[They are] all quality, international players and that's great, you have to train as well as you can if you're going to play," Evans told BBC Sport. "You have to be as professional as you can and I'm really looking forward to it.

I don't want to be a one-cap wonder

"Firstly it's just a change, it's always good to freshen things up in your career and now was the right time to make a change. "The Blues had a cracking season last year and I hope we can keep the momentum. "They play a great brand of attacking rugby and put a lot of width on the ball. "That's the game I like, but they've also got the right mix with some big, big centres. They can go wide or down the middle." Evans debuted for Llanelli region the Scarlets in 2003 and has played 75 times for them, including 16 Heineken Cup games, notching up 11 tries.

Evans was called up to the Welsh squad in autumn 2006, making his debut in the Test against the Pacific Islands. "I don't want to be a one-cap wonder," said Evans. "There are a lot of professional guys in this squad. "Between them and our great coaches, hopefully they can help me develop and get a look in again [with Wales]."
