Mike Rayer will leave his role as Cardiff coach to join English National League One club Bedford Blues as director of rugby on a three-year deal.
The former Wales international spent two seasons as a player at Goldington Road between 1996 and 1998.
"The offer came out of the blue, but it was one that I knew that I had to seriously consider," Rayer said.
"Obviously it's a wrench to leave the Arms Park, but I have to consider job security for myself and my family."
Rayer will again link up with former Cardiff Blues centre Matt Allen, who joined Bedford last season and captained Bedford to this year's Powergen Shield.
Despite being well regarded as a coach, Rayer was overlooked by the Arms Park management for promotion to the regional Cardiff Blues set-up as Geraint John's replacement.
John, Blues head coach Dai Young's right-hand man, has accepted a job to run the youth academy of Gloucester's Hartpury College.
The Blues decided to replace John by offering former Wales and Lions scrum-half Rob Howley his first job in coaching.
