Ruddock learns lessons in defeat

Mike Ruddock felt a crucial late decision went against his side.

Worcester Warriors director of rugby Mike Ruddock says his team will not dwell on Saturday's 37-19 defeat at Bath but will take lessons from it.

"For long periods we were competitive," Ruddock told BBC Hereford & Worcester. "But we dropped our standards at crucial moments and it cost us.

"But we have to put it behind us and get ready for Harlequins on Thursday.

"It's gone now. It'll be great to get back to Sixways. We know we can be competitive against any team."

Warriors did get back into the game with a Chris Pennell try, and were still in with a chance when they trailed by only six points with six minutes left.

They then gifted Bath an interception try. But Ruddock felt his team should have had a penalty for a high tackle before Bath broke away and scored.

"We felt there was a high tackle in there," said Ruddock. "But the ball was turned over and they raced away to score.

"We made the point at half-time that we have to dominate the collisions and, for 20 minutes, we did that.

"We needed a little bit of luck, but we didn't get it, and those are the sorts of things that decide close games."

Now the Warriors must turn their attentions to a Harlequins side who won their first two games of the season, at Saracens and then at home to Bristol, but now come into Thursday's game on the back of two straight tight defeats.

Having lost 24-20 at Gloucester last weekend, they then went down 28-27 at home to London Irish on Saturday, after throwing away a 20-8 half-time lead.

Thursday night's game against Harlequins (2000 BST) will be broadcast live on BBC Hereford and Worcester on 104,104.4 and 104.6 fm and also on-line at bbc.co.uk/herefordandworcester.
