Jim Mallinder was relieved when the final whistle blew at Bristol
|
Northampton boss Jim Mallinder admitted to late nerves before his side closed out a 25-21 victory at Bristol in the European Challenge Cup.
Saints led by 16 points with 15 minutes to go at the Memorial Stadium on Sunday, only for the hosts to hit back strongly and set up a tight finish.
"I'd be lying if I said I was completely relaxed up there," Mallinder told BBC Radio Northampton.
"But we slowed it down well and managed to hold on to the ball," he added.
"In the end the players really did us proud."
Northampton's fourth consecutive bonus-point victory secured them a place in the quarter-finals with two pool matches remaining.
The Saints visit Montpellier and then entertain Toulon at Franklin's Gardens next month.
