Newcastle Falcons flanker Peter Browne has signed a new two-year contract at Kingston Park, keeping him with the Premiership club until 2011. The 21-year-old former Durham University student made seven appearances this season, having made his debut during the 2007/08 campaign. He said: "The coaches are working with me very closely over the summer, we have identified areas for improvement. "I'm determined to come back bigger and better for next season." Director of rugby Steve Bates said: "Peter provides a big physical presence in an extremely competitive back row division. "As well as that he is a very talented footballer, and with a summer of hard work under his belt he will be among those challenging for first team places."

We have one or two finishing touches still to make but everyone at the club is really looking forward to seeing a strong challenge from us in 2009/10

Browne forms part of a back row division already including the likes of Samoan captain Filipo Levi, Tongan international Josh Afu, number eight Adam Balding, Kiwi Sevens international Brent Wilson, hard-hitting Ed Williamson, England Under-18s captain Alex Gray and England Under-19s openside Will Welch. "The back row is an extremely competitive area of the squad, and we have a bit of everything with the mix of players in there for next season," said Bates. "Our squad is coming together very nicely, we have one or two finishing touches still to make but everyone at the club is really looking forward to seeing a strong challenge from us in 2009/10."
