London Irish have signed Newcastle Falcons' second-row Andy Buist on a two-year contract.

Buist, who can also play in the back row, makes the trip south as James Hudson leaves the Exiles for Newcastle.

Irish head coach Toby Booth said: "James Hudson's departure created an opportunity for another ambitious player to come.

"He is the sort of player that will help us capitalise on the way the game is evolving."

Booth added: "We're looking forward to getting our hands on him so that we can develop him as a stalwart of the second and back row resources we're building here."

The 24-year-old Buist played for Alnwick before joining the Newcastle Falcons Academy where he was "Player of the Season" for 2003-04.

Buist, who went to Lord Wandsworth College near Hook and also played at Alton RFC, said he was looking forward to moving back to the south-east.

He said: "This move is an important rugby decision for me. It is a positive change for me, one that I'm really looking forward to.

"I admire the type of game that London Irish plays and I want to be part of it."
