Llanelli Scarlets were made to work hard before securing an EDF Energy Cup win over English strugglers Harlequins.

The Scarlets threatened to run riot after early tries from Darren Daniel and Inoke Afeaki, but Quins recovered well and replied with an Ugo Monye try.

Barry Davies' try on 49 minutes, deftly created by Regan King, gave the home side some breathing space.

Nathan Thomas crossed with 10 minutes left to secure a bonus point, Stephen Jones adding a third conversion.

The match started with a sickening accidental collision between Scarlets centre Gavin Evans and Harlequins number eight Chris Hala'ufia.

Evans was left unconscious after being struck flush in the jaw by Hala'ufia's head as he went to tackle the centre.

Despite the force of the impact, Evans was able to walk gingerly off the pitch and reports then suggested he had escaped serious injury.

Harlequins looked to be in for a torrid afternoon at Stradey Park when wing Daniel finished a flowing move to open the scoring in the corner on 11 minutes.

Lock Afeaki then barged his way over three minutes later to score a try which was awarded on video evidence.

More misery followed just before the half-hour mark when Mel Deane was sent to the sin-bin, but it was Harlequins who scored next as wing Monye burst through in midfield to cross under the posts.

Evans' first-minute injury had brought Regan King to the action, and some magical midfield play from the Kiwi centre created the Scarlets' third try for full-back Davies shortly after the break.

Number eight Thomas then benefited from a superb Scarlets scrum to dive over and give the Scarlets a bonus point their performance hardly deserved.

"I was pleased with certain aspects of our game and not so pleased with others, but overall we showed a lot of our all-round skills out there.

"We were sloppy on occasions, which put pressure on our defence, but I thought our players stuck at it superbly in the second half which augurs well moving forward.

"We know the talent we have got in this squad, we feel we have got a pretty effective game-plan and we will now look forward to Newcastle next weekend."
