Leeds Carnegie's Neil Back to meet RFU referee assessor

Neil Back
Back's Leeds have five games left to secure their Premiership status

Leeds head coach Neil Back will meet the Rugby Football Union's referee assessor Tony Spreadbury this week to discuss decisions against his team.

Back thinks Leeds are being harshly penalised because officials think his side are the weaker team at the scrum.

"We found a lot of decisions [in the defeat at Gloucester] confusing and I'll be meeting with Tony this week about it," Back told BBC Radio Leeds.

"Up to the last five minutes it was 15 penalties against and just two for."

He added: "That, for a side that has proved over the season how good their discipline is, is very confusing.

"It was very frustrating. We have had a pretty dominant scrum over the last four games against some of the Premiership's scrummaging sides in Leicester, Sale, Wasps and Saracens. Yet today we got pinged quite a few times in that area and also at the contact area.

"During the game we can't do much as coaches to get messages to the referee about things like this. But at half-time each team is allowed to make three points to the ref and I did that, as I do in every match.

"But little changed until the last five minutes when maybe he thought, 'I'm blowing the whistle one-way quite a bit today'."

Leeds' 19-0 loss at Kingsholm ended a three-match winning run and keeps them in 11th, two points ahead of bottom side Worcester. They now host Northampton on Saturday as they look to build on their recent strong home form.

Back said: "We created a lot of chances against Gloucester and showed great fight, spirit and character and that will serve us well for the rest of the season.

"A less mentally strong side would have capitulated at the end of this game and let in a lot of tries, but we didn't and that's credit to the players.

"I'm very proud of the squad for fighting so hard and we need to keep doing that in our other matches."
