Prop Greg Somerville has been ruled out of New Zealand's tour of Great Britain and Ireland with a calf injury.
Somerville failed a last-minute fitness test just hours before the squad's departure on Thursday.
Auckland's Saimone Taumoepeau has been called up as a replacement to the 35-man squad.
Back-up fly-half Luke McAlister withdrew on Tuesday with a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee, with Otago's Nick Evans taking his place.
"It's disappointing news for Luke and Greg," said coach Graham Henry.
"The medical advice for Luke is clear. Surgery is the best option."
Ali Williams will miss training this week with a shoulder strain but the second row is expected to be fit in time for the second Test, against Ireland on 12 November.
New Zealand are attempting a Grand Slam and start their tour with a Test against Wales on 5 November, followed by games against Ireland, England and Scotland on consecutive Saturdays.
