Edinburgh see off Swansea
Edinburgh proved too powerful for Swansea at Myreside
Edinburgh 30-20 Swansea
Edinburgh salvaged some pride as they completed the Heineken Cup and Welsh-Scottish League double over Swansea at Myreside. But they had to survive an impressive late rally from the All Whites, who refused to throw in the towel. The opening exchanges featured a spate of penalties by stand-offs Gordon Ross and Gavin Henson before Lions number eight Simon Taylor bustled through for the first try of the contest. Ross added the conversion and then put his side in the driving seat with an opportunist drop goal from a tricky angle.
Ross was wide with the kick, but more than made amends with two penalties in quick succession to open up a gap of 21 points. The Welshmen refused to buckle completely, however, and they clawed their way back into the picture with a score from Geraint Lewis, converted by Henson. The revival continued as Henson converted in the wake of a typically robust effort by skipper Scott Gibbs. Ross eased the home jitters with his fifth penalty in the closing stages.
Edinburgh: Derrick Lee, Cammie Murray, David Officer, Kevin Utterson, Chris Paterson, Gordon Ross, Graeme Burns (captain), Allan Jacobsen, Carlo Di Ciacca, Craig Smith, Matt Jolly, Nathan Hines, Andrew Dall, Martin Leslie, Simon Taylor
Swansea: Kevin Morgan; Shaun Payne, Brima Lima, Scott Gibbs (capt), Matthew Robinson; Gavin Henson, Sililo Martens, Andrew le Chevalier, Johnny Marsters, Ben Evans, Lee Jones, Tyrone Maullin, Geraint Lewis, Dean Thomas, Hywel Jenkins.
