Toulouse reached deep into their resources to power past Newport and were deserved winners of their Heineken Cup Pool Six clash.

The Black and Ambers needed to win to keep their slim quarter-final hopes alive and snatched the lead 10 minutes into the second half with a breakaway try from Jason Forster.

The openside supported a 40-metre run by fellow backrow Andy Powell, which spread-eagled the Toulouse defence and gave the Welsh renewed hope.

Newport had been under pressure throughout the match, but suddenly it looked as if it would be a shock victory for the visitors.

The home side scored three tries in 10 minutes and flanker Finau Maka finished off a move by squeezing over at the corner flag.

Yann Delaigue then squeezed over after Pelous had caused havoc among the Newport defence when he stormed into a ruck from five metres out.

The home side's third try was even tighter, with right wing Michel Marfaing touching down just inside the dead-ball line.

Newport's replacements brought fresh vigour to the game but it was Forster who was on hand again to take the scoring pass again from a 40-metre move in the dying seconds, but the French side held out to win.
