Matt Burke's flawless kicking secured Newcastle a vital win against bottom-placed Leeds at Headingley.
Mathew Tait scored Newcastle's try and Burke kicked the rest of their points to give the Falcons back-to-back wins in the league.
Leeds, playing in front of an 11,601 crowd, their second biggest ever, crossed the line through Andre Snyman.
But although Gordon Ross kicked a penalty and conversion he missed chances to win them the game.
Leeds started brightly, with Tom Biggs twice threatening the Falcons' line, before Tait went close for Newcastle.
However, Tait soon opened the scoring, beating Biggs to Toby Flood's delicate kick, and Burke converted.
Ross then missed a penalty for the Tykes but was successful soon after, only for Burke to restore Newcastle's advantage with a long-range penalty.
Leeds levelled the scores when Ross converted after Snyman went over despite Tait's despairing tackle, but Burke edged Newcastle into a 13-10 lead just before the break.
In the second half Ross was short with a long-range penalty and the Tykes had a try ruled out for a forward pass.
Leeds threw everything at Newcastle in the final minutes but the visitors held out for their third league win of the season.
Newcastle coach Rob Andrew:
"This is a good Leeds side, don't underestimate how well they've done over the last six weeks. It was always going to be tough but we just about deserved it.
"The players responded magnificently. Two days after Christmas they've given everything for the club - you can't ask for any more than that."
Leeds coach Phil Davies:
"We created enough chances to win two games, let alone one. It's very disappointing after five or six weeks of good momentum.
"When you are pressurising like we did in the first half we needed to show more patience and composure with the football. If we had have done we would have scored more points."
