Mehrtens denies Harlequins link
All Blacks fly-half Andrew Mehrtens celebrates a recent try for the Crusaders
Mehrtens is still involved with the Crusaders in the Super 12
All Blacks fly-half Andrew Mehrtens has denied he is pondering a move to England with Harlequins.

Quins, along with London Irish, were among the sides rumoured to be keen on Mehrtens if he leaves New Zealand.

"It's rubbish," he said. "I have not spoken to anyone from Harlequins at any time. There is nothing in it."

Mehrtens had previously suggested he "would look for a challenge elsewhere" if he was no longer required by the Crusaders and the All Blacks.

"There are still things I want to do here and I would love to play against the Lions," said the 70-cap veteran.

"It may be that I am not required and I would be comfortable with that."

Welsh regional side the Ospreys and Leeds, who have already recruited Mehrtens' long-time half-back partner Justin Marshall, were also among the clubs linked with the player.

New Zealand are likely to start with the talented Daniel Carter at fly-half against the Lions, but Mehrtens' experience could still be called upon.

The 31-year-old is currently involved in Canterbury Crusaders' attempt to win a fifth Super 12 title.

He is five points away from overtaking Australian Matt Burke's Super 12 record of 959 points.
