Hereford joined Bromsgrove in winning promotion from Midlands Two West after a 16-9 play-off victory Scunthorpe.

Chairman Guy Griffiths was delighted by his side's performance in what was always going to be a tense game.

"We scored a try through Nick Harrison and three penalties from Dean Powell and it was a sensational game.

"Hereford dominated throughout and a lot of people came up to watch what was a superb game," he said.

The Wyeside club have played Midlands One rugby before and have also been in the National Leagues in the past, but has recently undergone a rebuilding programme.

Griffiths feels this game was a sign that the club is on its way back.

"This was a play-off match between Midlands Two East and Midland Two West for the right to play in what was known as Midlands One," he explained.

It has taken us eight years to get back up there but we are booming now

"After we beat Bromsgrove last Saturday the players asked me if they could come over the night before, so they stayed Friday night at their own expense.

"But this was an absolutely fantastic win," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

Hereford's promotion to the new National Three Midlands division means they will not be short of derby matches next season.

They will renew league rivalries with their old Herefordshire rivals Luctonians, who narrowly missed out on the Midlands One play-offs, while Malvern and Bromsgrove will both also compete at this level.

Griffiths is hopeful that this promotion will be the springboard to better times for the club.

"It has taken us eight years to get back up there but we are booming now."
