Japan winger Daisuke Ohata, the leading try scorer in international rugby, will miss the World Cup after injuring his left Achilles tendon against Portugal.
Ohata, who has scored a record 69 Test tries, limped out of Japan's 15-13 win in Lisbon on Saturday.
Japan open against Australia in Lyon on 8 September in Group B, which also includes Fiji, Wales and Canada.
Ohata had only just returned from surgery to his right Achilles when he was named in the squad two weeks ago.
