Williams lauds Leinster effort
Matt Williams says his team answered the critics
Leinster coach Matt Williams praised the courage of his players in Saturday's Celtic League final fightback win over Munster.
Williams' team fought back to claim a 24-20 victory after being a man down and trailing by six points at half-time. Leinster had lost the services of flanker Eric Miller in the 25th minute when he was sent off for kicking Munster number eight Anthony Foley. "We knew we had to go out today and perform and we did that," said a delighted Williams. "In the first half we were very nervous and then Eric got sent off.
"When they came off at half time I said that everyone in the country would say we were going to fold and I just asked them would they be right or wrong. "We had to get back to the game plan, get the ball and run at them; be ourselves, be Leinster and to their credit the lads did that. "The courage they showed was incredible. "Everything was against us - a great side, a point against us, a man down and everyone saying we would crash. "They didn't crash, they stood and went for it and won a very famous victory." "The forwards were great, especially a man down," Williams said.
"They know that by Munster's rolling maul pretty much, the tactics worked pretty well, the scrum was rock solid and we competed very well in the lineout. "So if the backs got space it was the forwards who created it. It was a very good team performance." Williams' Munster counterpart Declan Kidney was magnanimous in defeat. He said: "Leinster played really well today and it was a fully merited win. "It's disappointing but that's the way things happen and we just have to move on from it. "This season's not over yet." |
