Salford winger Dean McGilvray will miss the start of the Super League season after undergoing a hernia operation.
The 20-year-old former St Helens player, one of seven close-season signings made by the Reds, is facing four weeks on the sidelines.
Coach Shaun McRae said: "Dean has been struggling with tendinitis and we don't know whether this has caused the hernia or whether it existed previously.
"Fortunately his core strength is good so his absence will be minimal."
