Millward wants full-time referees
St Helens coach Ian Millward
St Helens coach Ian Millward has called for the introduction of full-time referees in Super League.

Millward is concerned at the standard of refereeing at the start of the new season and wants action to be taken.

"I've looked at a lot of tapes and there are a lot of areas that are inconsistent," he said.

"What are we going to do about the referee situation? What are we going to do to get it better? Going full-time would be a start."

Millward is also concerned at the inexperience of the current team of younger referees, especially after the loss of Stuart Cummings and Russell Smith.

Cummings stopped officiating three years ago to become the Rugby Football League technical director while Smith is refereeing in Australia.

"We've lost two referees over the last three years and that's a huge loss, they were two major players," added Millward.

"I'm not here to bag referees, who have a hard job to do.

"I just think we've helped every other aspect of the game but here is an area that is going to have a big effect on everyone. We can't control injuries but we can control other things.

"I find the playing standards are fantastic, the fan support, sponsorship and the profile of the game are going through the roof but I do find at the moment that we're starting to be very inconsistent.

"The Super League coaches meeting has been cancelled and there is so much us coaches want to talk about. We really need that feedback for the betterment of the game.

"Otherwise we are going to get big crowds like this and we're going to be talking about all the wrong things in the game."
