Hull KR 28-29 Warrington
Hull KR v Warrington

Hull KR: 28 (4)
Tries: Jake Webster, Cockayne, Fisher, Welham, Fitzhenry
Goals: Murrell 4

Warrington: 29 (28)
Tries: Martin Gleeson, Hicks 2, Johnson, Westwood
Goals: Briers 4
Drops: Monaghan

A late drop-goal from Michael Monaghan helped Warrington earn a narrow victory over Hull KR.

The first half belonged to Warrington with tries for Martin Gleeson, Paul Johnson and Ben Westwood and two from Chris Hicks.

The home side fought back in the second half with Ben Cockayne, Ben Fisher, Kris Welham and Daniel Fitzhenry going over and four goals from Scott Murrell.

But Monaghan's effort with six minutes to go ultimately proved crucial.

Warrington opened the scoring when Gleeson took advantage of poor marking from Jake Webster before Hicks touched down for his first after good work from Vinnie Anderson and Kevin Penny.

Johnson extended Warrington's lead when he capitalised on a poor Webster pass and ran in from the halfway line.

And the situation went from bad to worse for the home side on 22 minutes with Westwood's try while Hicks crossed over for his second score, handing Warrington an impressive 22-0 lead.

However, Webster atoned for his earlier mistakes when he touched down six minutes before the interval.

And coach Justin Morgan's half-time team talk had its desired effect as the Robins began to dominate the match.

Cockayne began the fightback on 63 minutes with a fine solo run before Ben Galea set up Fisher two minutes later.

With pressure building, Monaghan kicked over the drop-goal - a score which proved crucial as Welham and Fitzhenry touched down, with Murrell adding the extras with the boot.

  • Hull KR coach Justin Morgan

"The start let us down again, we gave them back-to-back penalties, came up with errors and gifted them field position.

"The second half with the pressure off saw us being a bit more direct. But you can't give sides 28 points start and expect to win.

"Now we have two weeks before we can rectify our mistakes. We just need to become more dominant early on in games."

  • Warrington coach Paul Cullen

"We were 28-0 up and completely and utterly in control. We then conceded five back-to- back penalties and spent the last 10 minutes of the first half defending our try-line.

"To go in 28-4 up at half time was a very fair reflection but to say we are not happy with the penalty count is the understatement of the season. It was seven against us in the first half and six in the second.

"We are completely in charge, then the back-to-back penalties came and the pace went out of our game and when we are playing fast we are looking good, when we are not we are not."
