Thrashers end New Jersey streak
The Atlanta Thrashers prevented New Jersey Devils from setting a franchise record of nine straight home wins with two late goals. Marc Savard scored at 13:04 of the third period after a bad bounce left the Devils' net unoccupied before Vyacheslav Kozlov followed with another goal just 15 seconds later. The Thrashers had taken a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Dan Snyder and Ilya Kovalchuk, only to have the Devils bounce back on second-period scores from Stephen Guolla and Patrik Elias. In Washington, Steve Konowalchuk, Peter Bondra and Jeff Halpern each had a goal and an assist as the Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 3-0. Konowalchuk scored midway through the opening period, then he and Halpern assisted on Bondra's second-period strike.
