Coleraine rower Alan Campbell was pipped by Mahe Drysdale in a record breaking single scull final at the World Championships in Poznan. Campbell led after 500m but New Zealander Drysdale stretched clear in the middle section of the race. However, Campbell closed quickly in the final 500m and was just a half a length behind at the line. Both men broke the world record - Drysdale won in 6.33.35 minutes with Campbell clocking 6.34.30. Campbell qualified for the final after a comfortable win in his semi-final on Thursday, beating Olympic silver medallist Ondrej Synek into second with Olympic champion Olaf Tufte in third. Campbell had won his heat on Sunday in 6:54.15, finishing over 10 seconds ahead of Czech Republic rower Synek. The British team member won the opening World Cup meet in Spain and before earning second places behind Drysdale in Munich and Henley.
