Smith had only finished a disappointing third in his heat
Colin Smith reached the semi-final of the single sculls at the World Rowing Championships with a thrilling win in the repechage on Wednesday.

Smith, who finished third in his heat, edged out Australia's David Crawshay.

Olympic medallists Debbie Flood and Elise Laverick also won their repechage to reach the final of the women's double sculls.

"Coming to the end of the race, I thought, 'it's a metre, it's not in the bag, keep going'", said Smith.

"But never at any stage in the race did I think I wouldn't get my second or first place and qualify," he added.

The women's lightweight quad of Tanya Brady, Lorna Norris, Hester Goodsell and Naomi Hoogesteger reached their final with a repechage win over powerful French and Dutch crews.

There was also a win in the women's lightweight sculls for Wallingford's Helen Casey and Jennifer Goldsack.
