The 49-year-old succeeds Dave Titmuss, who stepped down last year to concentrate on his role as the sport's performance director.

Treseder took over as Australia's coach in 2001.

They lost out to Canada in the final of the Athens Paralympics and were third at last year's World Championships.

Treseder, who begin his new job in April, beat off a number of top-class candidates from home and abroad to land the post.

His first assignment will be the Visa Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May, where Great Britain will face Australia as well as Canada and the Netherlands.

GB will also compete in the European Championships in Germany later this year, as they bid to secure their place at next year's Beijing Paralympics and improve on the bronze medal won in Athens.

"I am looking forward to the challenge and getting the team to the highest level of the wheelchair basketball," said Treseder.

"I hope this will be a real opportunity for young and energetic players to stake a claim in the team over the next couple of years."
